The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) is responsible for making a judgement on the performance of Adult Services departments across the country. The reason for this is to:
- Promote improvement in the quality of care to service users
- Support effective performance management for adult social care services in local councils
- Provide annual independent judgements of the performance of local council’s with adult social care services responsibilities
- Establish what action each council needs to take to improve the quality of their adult social care services
- Provide information to service users and the general public about the performance of their local council in providing adult social care services
- Assess performance in implementing the grants procedure for social care
In assessing performance CSCI uses evidence including:
- The published performance indicators and other statistical data
- Evidence agreed during monitoring meetings
- Information from the Delivery and Improvement Statement which indicate targets and progress against national priorities
- CSCI service inspections provide in-depth evaluation of particular aspects of social services
Details of the standards and criteria CSCI use are available on their website http://www.csci.org.uk/
Each year an annual review meeting takes place between CSCI and the local authority, following this, a performance letter is produced and the adult social care services given a star rating.
