  • If your name is not on the Register you will not be able to vote.

Nationality - Who can register to vote

  • All British, Commonwealth and Irish citizens as well as people from member states of the European Union.
  • European Union citizens cannot vote in UK parliamentary elections.

  • Everyone who will be 18 years of age or over, during the currency of the next register.
  • The homeless, remand prisoners and mental health patients can register by completing the appropriate form, which can be obtained from Electoral Services:

How the register is compiled and when it is published

  • A postal canvass of every residential property takes place between August and November each year.
  • You should ensure that your name is entered on this form along with those of every eligible member of your household.
  • It is published on the 1st December each year.

How to check that your name is on the register

What you should do if your name is not on the register

How to register if you move house

  • If you move house between December and August, download and fill in the Voter Registration Form. Your name will then appear as an amendment to the register in 2-6 weeks.
  • A Register of Electors form is delivered to every household during August and September each year. If you move house at that time, and up until the middle of November, you should amend the details on this form as we use the information to update our records and to publish a new register on 1 December. If you have not received a Register of Electors form at your new address you should contact Electoral Services who will send you a new form to complete.
  • We will tell the Electoral Registration Officer for your old address that you have moved, so that your name can be removed from that register.
  • People who live at two homes (including students) are allowed to register at both.
  • If you do not want to be removed from your other address please explain why on the form.

How to register as an overseas elector

  • Anyone who has been registered as an elector in the UK during the last 15 years (or is a child of someone who was registered, if they were not old enough themselves) can register as an overseas elector when they live abroad.
  • You must complete a special form from Electoral Services:
  • Overseas electors cannot vote in local government elections.
