Cllr Mehboob Khan
Putting local people first - a message from Cllr Mehboob Khan, Leader of Kirklees Council:
Everyone knows these are very difficult times, but Kirklees Council is maintaining a clear focus on its biggest priorities.
We are continually striving to protect and improve our services against a backdrop of severe financial challenges caused by a cut in government grant.
Our key priorities are to:
- Support older people to be healthy, active and involved in their communities - Helping people to improve their health and well-being. We will focus on preventative work and empowering people to be in control of their decisions.
- Lead Kirklees out of recession - Making sure we emerge with a stronger economy, more job opportunities and better paid jobs.
- Enhance life chances for young people - Working in partnership to improve educational attainment and enable young people to reach their full potential.
- Provide effective and productive services - Ensuring services are focused on the needs of the community and are excellent value for money.
The Cabinet will continue working with all our partners to improve Kirklees as a whole. We want our district to become even better, even more attractive. The council is always looking for innovative ways to develop services and deliver excellent value for money.
And even when we are making some very tough decisions about how to spend a reduced budget, we recognise the clear need to invest in long-term prosperity for local people and local business.
A strong economy is essential to Kirklees and our anti-recession strategy, which safeguards jobs and attracts new investment, has been praised at national level.
We are moving forward with confidence and strong leadership – and always putting local people first.
