Useful information

To enjoy the best of the outdoors, make sure you consider the following when planning your trip:

Wear appropriate clothing

From the wilderness of Marsden Moor to the heights of Holme Moss, over 70% of Kirklees is rural and due to its Pennine location the weather can change rapidly. Remember hats (summer and winter), waterproofs and warm clothing, and for cyclists helmets, lights and reflective clothing are a must.

Wear appropriate footwear

Stout shoes or boots are recommended for all walks in the countryside, as some routes are rough and can be muddy. Comfortable shoes are recommended for all short walks around town and village centres. Use trouser clips with your bike to prevent catching on the chain and good quality non-slip footwear is recommended.

Food and drink

Although there are cafés and shops in most towns and villages, it's always advisable to take spare food and drink. This particularly applies to longer routes in more rural areas, where there can be sections with no food stops.

Take a map

For all medium and long distance walks and cycle routes an Ordnance Survey (OS) map of the appropriate area is advisable. Although these routes are signed, mistakes can happen. It's also advisable if you're staying with friends or in local accommodation to let someone know where you are going and what time you think you will return. Leave an emergency contact number, but remember mobiles don't always work in remote areas.

Remember the environment

The countryside is used by all types of people including walkers, cyclists and horseriders. Please ensure that you treat the routes with care and consideration and take any litter with you. In most areas there are public car parks to leave your vehicle. Make sure you take all valuables with you - don't leave them in your car.

Remember all users

Many routes are popular with walkers, cyclists and horseriders alike. Be sensible with your speed and watch out for small children. For the best enjoyment of the countryside, treat others with care and consideration.

Cycling

When cycling always make sure you have the right bike. Certain routes require a mountain bike or sturdy tourer, on others a road bike will be adequate. Always check your bike - brakes, bell and wheels - before you set off. Also beware of any obstructions that could cause damage to your bike whilst cycling. Take at least a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and pump with you.

Outdoor activity clubs

Always contact the club before you visit to check whether you need your own equipment and to find out whether there are any restrictions such as age, height or health requirements. Ensure you have the proper clothing required and follow all safety procedures.
