With all it's rich history, heritage, and creative tradition, it's hardly surprising that Kirklees has "turned out" and continues to produce some notable characters with towering achievements covering all aspects of life - drama, literature, science, music, sport and politics.

Born in Mirfield on 13 July 1940 Patrick Stewart, is an internationally respected actor known for successfully bridging the gap between the theatrical world of the Shakespearean and modern stage, and that of film and television. Known around the world for his portrayal of Star Trek's Jean Luc Picard, and his many Shakespearean roles, with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Patrick has received accolades throughout his career. Recently appointed Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, Patrick still maintains his links with the area. Here is part of his first opening speech, welcoming students to the area:
"I grew up in the area and I continue to have strong connections with the history of it. My love for this part of the country, my admiration and affection for the people and institutions of West Yorkshire, my well-known devotion to a certain football club, go you Blues!, means that in spirit I have never been away."
The late Roy Castle, entertainer and television personality, was born in Scholes near Huddersfield.

Actor Gordon Kaye, who played Rene Artois in the television comedy series 'Allo 'Allo, was born in Huddersfield.

The band Embrace, from West Yorkshire, recorded their chart-topping album at Beaumont Street Studios, Huddersfield. The Good Will Out was number one in the album charts in 1998.

Huddersfield actress Zoe Lucker shot to fame as Tanya Turner in the hit TV series Footballers Wives. The show is currently being shown in New Zealand and Zoe is becoming as popular on the other side of the world as she is here.

Actress Lena Headey was talent spotted as a 17 year old drama student at Huddersfield's Shelley High School. Since then she has become a familiar name on the big screen starring in films such as The Actors, Ripley's Game, The Brothers Grimm and the thriller Cave.

The late Robert Palmer, a singer famous for his Grammy award winning hits 'Addicted to Love' and 'Simply Irresistible'.

The late, great, British and American film star, James Mason was born in Huddersfield.
Did you know...

James Mason legendary film star, started life in Huddersfield in 1909.

Today, in Marsh, James Mason Court is named after the local born Hollywood star.
