Horse riding
With wide expanses of unspoilt countryside, countless country roads, bridle routes and abundant wildlife, Kirklees
is a great area to enjoy horse riding.
Circular routes
Available across the district and ranging from 7-30 miles, many of our circular routes involve a mixture of public
highways and bridleways. For a pleasant day's ride to explore rural Kirklees try out Emley Mast Circular, the
Kirklees Eastern Riding Route, or North Kirklees Riding Route. Alternatively, make the most of our local
reservoirs around Holme Moss, Holmbridge or the Wessenden Valley.
National Bridleways
Further afield there are opportunities to link to national routes including the Pennine Bridleway National Trail,
the Mary Townley Loop and the Trans Pennine Trail, all of which offer wonderful opportunities for long distance
horse riding.
The Pennine Bridleway currently passes 13 miles to the west of Huddersfield, and there are plans to implement a
feeder route across Kirklees linking the Trans Pennine Trail near Penistone to the Pennine Bridleway above Marsden
and Slaithwaite. Due to open in Summer 2007, watch this space for more information.
Sourcing local routes
A number of local routes are available to purchase from our tourist
information centres and Marsden Information
Point. These have been tried, tested and enjoyed by the Kirklees Bridleways Group and are contained in two
booklets of 10 routes.
Here, you can also pick up the free Kirklees Eastern Riding Route and North Kirklees Riding Route, and purchase
'Explorer' 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey Maps and the Marsden OS centre map. |
