Collections and events
Whilst the galleries in Kirklees attract and stage a varied programme of collections and exhibitions from all
over the world, there are noted collections, which have a history, rooted in the area.
Holmfirth Artweek
Held every July, this event attracts hundreds of exhibitors mostly from the area from far and wide who come to
look and to buy. Showcasing the best of artistic talent in the area, this event is the biggest charitable fund
raising event in the Holme Valley.
The Bamforth Collection - saucy seaside postcards
Based in Holmfirth, Bamforth & Co began manufacturing postcards around 1904 and quickly became synonymous with
the saucy seaside tradition.
For 85 years they were one of the largest producers of the once ubiquitous cards, before a Scarborough-based
publisher bought them in 1990 and production ceased a few years ago. Kirklees possess a collection of over 20,000
Bamforth postcards and 1,500 pieces of art, which is a celebration of the art form that is the comic postcard.
The Kirklees Collection
Huddersfield Art Gallery hosts a permanent collection of over 2000 works of art including paintings, prints,
drawings and sculpture representative of 20th century British art. Major works in the collection include Francis
Bacon's 'Figure Study II', Henry Moore's 'Falling Warrior', as well as works by Stanley Spencer, Edward Wadsworth,
and L S Lowry.
