A Bamforths saucy seaside postcard

Bamforths

The Bamforths of Holmfirth were pioneers of motion pictures in the early 1900s long before the Hollywood era. Their moving pictures, starring local people, were mainly comedies and were screened as far away as Russia - language was no barrier for silent movies!

Shortages during the First World War halted production and it never resumed. Instead the company turned to producing saucy colour seaside postcards and they never looked back.

A display of Bamforth postcards and other memorabilia can be seen at the restored Picturedrome Cinema in Holmfirth - the location of many Bamforth film premieres! The Picturedrome still hosts a wide variety of film events and other entertainment for the public.

Copies of the original Bamforth Postcards are available to purchase from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre

Did you know...

Over the years the Bamforths only ever employed four artists for the thousands of cheeky sea-side postcards they produced. They wanted to make sure their distinctive style with its bright colours and exaggerated characters was maintained.

Greetings from Bonemouth postcard
