Music festivals
Kirklees is home to an exciting programme of music throughout the year. Festivals celebrating local musical talent
and culture are a must for anyone looking for entertainment. There is something for everyone with rock, folk, jazz
and contemporary festivals.
February - Mrs Sunderland Music Competition
A renowned music competition held in Huddersfield and named in tribute to the great Yorkshire soprano Susan
Sunderland. From modest beginnings in 1889, the festival has vastly expanded so that it now spans nine days.
May - Shepley Spring Festival
A brand new folk festival for 2007. Shepley is a rural village in the heart of the Yorkshire Pennines.
Bringing you folk music, dancing, food and drink and featuring the Folk Train with live entertainment from
the festival artists as you travel the Penistone Line.
May - Holmfirth Festival of Folk
Every year at the beginning of May, Holmfirth hosts the Festival of Folk. The festival, great fun for all the
family, maintains the best of our folk traditions, and is committed to promoting young and emerging talent
whether local, national or international.
July - Cleckheaton Folk Festival
Cleckheaton Folk Festival is the premier event in the social calendar of this busy West Yorkshire town, which has
played host to the festival for the past 19 years. A particular feature of the festival weekend is that many of
the local pubs feature free music sessions and 'sing-a-rounds'. Here, along with the beer, visitors can sample
the talents of some excellent local performers - plus those of some of the festival acts - for nothing more than
the price of a pint!
September - Timeless Festival, Ravensknowle Park
Since 2001 the Timeless Music Project have assembled a fantastic multicultural and international line up of
cutting edge sounds which 'rock the house' in the lush surroundings of Ravensknowle Park on Wakefield Road. The
festival aims to showcase the best bands from Huddersfield and West Yorkshire - alongside national and
international artists.
October - Marsden Jazz Festival
Marsden Jazz Festival is one of the most atmospheric and exciting events in the country's jazz calendar. The
festival brings the very best of contemporary jazz musicians and singers to the area. The festival is set against
the stunning backdrop of the Pennine Moors which makes this event a real spectacle.
November - Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival is a renowned international platform for new music and related
contemporary art forms in Britain. One of the largest music festivals in Europe, the festival attracts performers
and visitors from all over the world and global critical acclaim.
