Map of road changes
Changes on 3 June 2008
On June 3rd, the street layout for St George's Square in Huddersfield is changing as part of the square's revival project.
The new road layout will mean that all non-essential traffic is banned from the square. These changes follow the public consultation about St George's Square, which happened in 2007.
The existing roundabout outside the George Hotel will be removed. This will separate Railway Street from the access road outside the George Hotel, which will become a two-way road providing access to the train station car park.
The main changes to traffic movements are:
- Railway Street will be closed to all traffic except buses, taxis and access.
- John William Street, from Northumberland Street and Railway Street, will become two-way.
- The one-way section of Station Street, next to the Britannia Building, will be reversed (to fit in with the roundabout being removed).
Changes to New North Parade, Half Moon Street, Market Place, Friendly Street, Primitive Street and St
George's Street are detailed on the adjacent plan.
Access to the train station car park will be from St Johns Road, Viaduct Street or Northumberland Street, via the
ring-road.
Temporary diversion signs will be provided until the permanent signs are installed.
- Motorists are advised to start planning alternative routes as soon as possible and allow
extra time for journeys on June 3rd.
The central space from John William Street up to the train station frontage will be fenced off, where needed, as a working area. Pedestrian routes will be clearly signed and all businesses will be open as usual.
Changes to bus services
At 5am on the morning of Tuesday June 3rd bus stops S4 (Holmfirth
Connection) and S5 (Free Town Bus) will have to be taken out of use as part of the St George's Square
Revival Scheme.
The Holmfirth Connection will move to a temporary site on Railway Street (approximately opposite The
Head of Steam). A Temporary Bus Stop sign will be used to identify the location.
The Free Town Bus will move to a stop on Station Street (by the Britannia Building), which will have
the traffic flow reversed as shown on the adjacent plan. The stop will be identified by a sign plate
fixed to a lighting column.
Shelters will not be available until the scheme is complete.
Changes to traffic movements
We intend to make these changes as smooth as possible. A provisional date of early June has been set for the changes to traffic movements in St. George's Square, exact date to be confirmed.
