For the period

November 2008

Working areas

The Working Areas Plan has been developed to give you an idea of where the works will be taking place and how to negotiate your way through them. The areas shown will be reduced where ever possible and temporary seating areas provided.

As works progress the newly laid flagged areas will remain fenced off until their foundations have reached the required strength, the grouting between the flags has been placed and the cleaning / final sealing coat has been applied. This may take up to a month.

Vehicular access

Following the traffic movement changes of June 3rd all non essential traffic is now banned from St Georges Square.

Railway Street is closed to all vehicles except buses, taxis and access to businesses and the train station drop off point. The train station car park is not accessible from the Railway Street approach.

Access to the train station car park and the George Hotel is possible via the ring road junctions with Viaduct Street, Northumberland Street & John Williams Street (St Johns Road). Motorists are advised to approach Northumberland Street and St Johns Road anti-clockwise off the ring road to make use of the left turn traffic filters.

The South Plaza (in front of the Head of Steam) will be closed to traffic whilst the new carriageway is constructed. See below for revised Taxi and disabled parking provisions. Access to St George Street shall be maintained.

In order to complete paving works in front of the Britannia building traffic on Railway Street will be temporarily diverted to follow the old road route which passed in front of the George Hotel.

Need help planning your route? Check out the Street Plan which shows the One-way Systems, Pedestrian Zones and the Car Parks.

Road closures

Access to Station Street shall be via John William Street, as existing, although a closure is in force to stop motorists turning from Station Street on to Railway Street. Refer to the Working Areas Plan for details.

Businesses with concerns over access should contact the Site Office for further information.

Pedestrian routes

Pedestrian routes are diverted locally around the working areas as defined on the Working Area Plan. Should you have any special requirements please call Wrekin at the St Georges Square Revival office.

Access to the train station is possible from all approaches and the existing disabled ramp is easily accessible.

Due to changes in traffic movements at the John Williams Street junction, pedestrians are advised to look both ways at all crossings.

Taxi Provision

The pick-up point for Hackney Carriages has been moved to plaza outside the Head of Steam which can be accessed by turning right as you walk out of the train station.

Buses

Due to works progressing on John William Street the (S4) Holmfirth Connection & (S5) the Freetown stop will be moved to the next stop (J3) (15427) outside the Mind Shop.

Bus Stops S1 to Birkby, Bracken Hall & Bradley, Fartown, Brighouse, Fixby & Rastrick & and S2 to Bradley, Bradford, Brighouse, Wyke, Leeds are now combined and both of the existing shelters have now been removed. Please check services with the bus operator as removal of the shelters means time tables can not be provided..

Pick up points for Train replacement buses, if needed, shall be in the Train Station car park unless otherwise identified.

Parking

The short stay car park will be closed until further notifice. Access to the long stay car park will be maintained.

The long stay car park remains unaffected, although as access is via the short stay car park, motorists are advised to leave a little extra time for their journey.

Parking designated for the George Hotel may be temporarily relocated somewhere within the site - close by. For details call either the Hotel on 01484 515444 or our site office.

The Train Station car park is accessible as a collection and drop off point for train commuters.

Disabled parking is provided directly outside the Train Station, in designated spaces directly next to the train station access ramp. If you experience any problems accessing the station please contact our site office. For further advice please contact Kirklees Council's Access Officer, Rob Greenwood on 01484 223324.
