M62 Car share lane

Ross Street Care - January 2008
highways.ross@kirklees.gov.uk

representation of the car share lane between the southbound side of the M606 and the eastbound side of the M62 at the Chain Bar Junction (26) Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly opened a new car share lane on the M606 in March. The car share lane, for use by drivers who have at least one passenger, has been built between the southbound side of the M606 and the eastbound side of the M62 at the Chain Bar Junction (26).

The Highways Agency is responsible for this scheme which is the first motorway car share lane in the country.

Surveys at this congested junction showed that 84% of vehicles have only one person in them at peak times of the day.

It is expected that journey times for those drivers who use the new car share lane will be reduced at peak periods. Drivers using the other parts of the junction will also benefit from reduced journey times because higher occupancy cars will be able to move to the new lane.

Car sharing can help save fuel costs and also reduce wear and tear on vehicles.

A police observation post will monitor the car share lane to make sure that only drivers with at least one passenger use it.
