Using Flash

Web Development - November 2006

What is Flash?

Flash is a type of file that can be used for including videos, animation, sound and interactivity in web pages. Flash files are commonly known as "Flash movies", although they don't always have moving pictures. Flash is a popular format because it works the same in different web browsers (for example, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari), and because the files are quick to download.

How to use Flash

To use Flash files you need a special plug-in program called the Flash Player, but it's likely that you have it already. Over 98% of Internet users already have Flash installed on their computers, so you may already be using it. The Flash Player is available as a free download from Macromedia, so if you don't have it then it's very easy to get.

When you have Flash installed on your computer, Flash movies will play automatically when you visit a page that includes Flash content.

Sometimes you may need to download the latest version of the Flash Player to view recently created files. Download the latest version of the Flash Player here - External site opens in a new window.

Why we use Flash on this site

Some people really like Flash movies, but others find multimedia content difficult to use. A wide range of people use this web site, and it's important that all our users can access the content they need. This means that we only use Flash where it is appropriate. We also provide the content of our Flash movies in alternative formats (for example, a transcription of what is said in a video) for those who don't want to use Flash.

Some examples of the Flash movies featured on this site are:

Person centred planning

The "Person centred planning" pages are for people with learning disabilities. By including Flash movies in these pages, we have provided content which can be played and listened to. In this case, the Flash movies are easier to use than the text alternatives.

Deaf videos

We have provided some of the content from our 'Guide for disabled people' in Flash movies. This means that deaf users can view British Sign Language videos of the content that is relevant to them. For people who are used to communicating in sign language, this format is both comfortable and easy to use.

An example of Flash content for children is:

Reading Adventures

We helped local writer and poet Rommi Smith to set up the Reading Adventures web site. The site is designed for young readers, and the Flash content makes the pages more engaging for children. Flash movies are also a good way of sharing video footage from some of the activity days that Rommi has organised for young readers in Kirklees.
