To use some of the features on our web site, you may need to type in some confidential information. For example, if you want to pay your council tax bill, you will need to tell us your payment details. We provide secure pages on our site so that you can send us these details safely.

How do I know if a page is secure?

If you are using a secure page, you will see a gold padlock symbol at the foot of the page, near the bottom right hand corner. It looks slightly different depending on which kind of browser you are using (for example, Internet Explorer or Firefox).
firefox browser explorer lock  internet explorer browser explorer lock  opera browser explorer lock

In the Address bar at the top of your browser, you will see that the addresses of some pages start with ‘https’ (instead of just ‘http’). The ‘s’ is another way of telling you that a page is secure. A message may also appear on your screen, saying that you are viewing information over a secure connection.

Geotrust logoWhere you see the GeoTrust symbol on our site, you can click it to confirm that we are registered as a secure site. This is called having a ‘secure certificate’.

Internet Explorer 4.0 browser issues

If you use an Internet Explorer 4.0 browser, you may get the following error message when you try to view secure pages on our site:

"Cannot connect to an expired server certificate"

If this happens then you simply need to download a new server certificate. This will enable you to use our secure pages.

Download the latest certificate and follow the installation instructions for your browser.

Note: After installing please check that the expiry date is 2028.
