There are several common features that you can find on most pages of the Kirklees website. Choose one of the options below to find out more:

Navigation Bar

The navigation bar is the horizontal bar at the top of each page. It contains all the main navigation features for this site.

The row of links right at the very top of the page (above the ‘Kirklees Council West Yorkshire’ title) includes information for users with disabilities, plus general help for all users.

The site title is also a link – you can click on it (or select it) to return to the main page of the web site, which we call the ‘home page’. You can also use the ‘Home’ link just below the title to get back to the home page.

Below this are links to the main content sections of the website, including “Community”, “Employment” and “News”. When you use these links, you will go to a menu for the subject that you have chosen. You can also enter these sections by using the access keys, which are keyboard shortcuts that can be used instead of a mouse. Find out more about access keys here.

Below the section links are some icons with text next to them. These are links to useful features of the website, such as the 'Payments & balances' area, which you can use to pay your bills online.

At the right hand end of the navigation bar is the search box. Here, you can enter a word or phrase to search the Kirklees website for the content that you are interested in.

Side Bar

The sidebar is on the left hand side of each page. This usually features:

The section image

There is a different image for each section of the web site. This is one way of letting you know which part of the site you are on. The side bars of the main sections are also colour-coded, which some people find useful for recognising where they are on the site.

Menu Trail

The menu trail is the series of links which appears in the middle of the page, near the top (just below the navigation bar). This trail shows how far into the site you have gone. Every time you choose an item from a menu and go to a new page, you will gain a new item in the trail. These trails are also sometimes called “biscuit trails” or “breadcrumb trails”, as they are like a series of breadcrumbs which you leave behind along a path to find your way back home. You can use the menu trail to return to pages that you have just visited, and it can also be a useful way of remembering where pages are.

Page information

You will find some extra information about the page you’re looking at in the middle of the page, just below the menu trail and above the content. This information will tell you:

Owner’s name – This is the person or department who owns the information. The owner is responsible for making sure that the information is accurate and up to date. Unless the page tells you otherwise, the owner is the person to contact if you have any questions about the information on that particular page. Email address – This is the email address for the owner of the page. Please check that there are no other contact details offered on the page before getting in contact with the owner. Sometimes the owner of the information may differ from the person to contact regarding the contents of the page.

Top links

These are the little links on the right hand side of the page that say "top" - these links will always take you back to the top of the page, without you having to scroll up. You will find these links on long pages, in between the content of the page.
