What open data is

Open data is information that is freely available for the public and other organisations to use, in any way that they wish, under a simple licence. We are committed to publishing open data so that people who live and work in Kirklees (and anyone else who is interested) can use this information to develop their own web sites and tools. We hope this will be a new way for people and organisations to help each other and to create useful local services.

Open data is also about increasing transparency and making both local and national government more accountable. For example, we will be opening up our spending data for items over £500. Eric Pickles (Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government) has asked all Government departments and councils to publish this spending data to help people see how public money is being spent.

We want to find out what data is most useful for people who live or work in Kirklees, so please use our feedback page to get in touch if there's some data you'd like to use which isn't available yet. Please also let us know if you use any of the data on these pages to build a new web site, application or service - we're interested to see the results.
