Leisure makes a defining contribution to life in Kirklees making us a fairer, happier, healthier, safer and stronger community.

Our volunteers are at the heart of culture and leisure activities in Kirklees; they play a pivotal role in encouraging and supporting people to get involved, and stay involved, in culture and leisure at all levels.

Work placements

Work with a number of partner organisations to provide short work placements to adults wanting to return to work or gain work related experience or skills. Partners include Work Link, Mental Health Matters and a range of adult training providers. Arrangements matching volunteers to opportunities and for their management and support are usually agreed on a case by case basis with the volunteer and referring partner.

Talking News

Talking News is a free fortnightly audio newspaper and CD / cassette tape delivered direct to people who struggle to read conventional newspapers. It provides news, views and features from the local newspapers circulating within Kirklees.

2 volunteer presenters and a bank of more than 30 volunteer readers are involved in producing this alongside 2 sound engineers, a News Editor, a Features Editor, and administration officers.

Transcription Service

Kirklees Transcription Service produces information in alternative formats for people with a visual impairment. This includes documents in Braille, large print and various audio formats for anyone who requests it.

The service also produces tactile images such as maps, plans, diagrams and even simplified pictures and has a reading machine which can scan and reproduce the text in an electronic format and read text in an electronic voice.

The service is looking at developing a small bank of 5 volunteers who will mainly be involved in transcribing a range of written community information into audio formats.
