Walking is the perfect activity for health

What a great way to meet others and get healthy in a safe way! The best thing is it's free and easy, you don't need any special equipment - just comfortable walking shoes and you can start slowly and build up gently. Almost everyone can do it and you can do it anywhere, at any time. Did you know walking can:
  • Make you feel good
  • Give you more energy
  • Help you sleep better
  • Help you reduce stress
  • Keep your heart strong
  • Reduce your blood pressure
  • Help you to manage your weight.

Short group walks

Join our programme of short, group walks of up to an hour led by a qualified, volunteer walk leader. These are great for people who have previously done little or no structured walking for their health. For details of the group walks in your area ring 01484 234097 or request a timetable of short health walks.

Longer led walks and rambles

There are many voluntary organisations which plan group walks for those keen to walk and ramble across Kirklees. Find out details in the Kirklees What's On publication.

Pathways in your area

Walking in a group doesn't suit everyone and you may prefer to follow a route map on your own or with a group of friends. Pathways to Health are mapped walking routes throughout Kirklees which give suggestions of ways to walk which generally take less than an hour.

Each set of Pathways has up to four different routes to follow, taking from about 15minutes to an hour to walk.

Nordic Walking

Nordic or pole walking, a fun and social walking activity with fantastic health benefits, has arrived in Kirklees. In addition to the health benefits of regular walking, using poles provides upper body exercise and reduces the stress on knees and other joints.

Volunteer Walk leader training

Why not consider becoming a volunteer walk leader and introducing others to the benefits of regular walking? A free one day training course provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to lead health walks and/or establish new walks in areas throughout Kirklees. You will receive ongoing support ans optional further training to help with setting up, promoting and maintaining a walking group.
