- Spirit is a free street theatre show which takes place every winter at Longcauseway, Dewsbury
Spirit, the free annual spectacular street theatre show lands back in Dewsbury town centre on Saturday 16 March with fire-spraying, mighty flying machines, all piloted by extravagant daredevils.
'Firebirds' performed by Theater Titanick from Münster in Germany has wowed audiences around the world including Edinburgh, Chile, Lisbon, Germany and Spain but are visiting Kirklees for the first time.
The show is about the dream of flying, wrapped up in a competition between brave but crazy drivers and their flying machines. Expect fire effects and explosions plus lots of fun as the pilots race to be the first to float off into the night sky.
The New Picture House has a special family screening for Spirit at 4pm - the classic Oscar-winning animation 'Spirited Away'. The volunteer-led, not-for-profit, community cinema can be found on the 3rd floor of Yorkshire House on South Street.
**New for 2013**
Pop up restaurant, café and bar! Open for one day only on Sat 16 March, Aroma will be open in the Market Place offering fresh and tasty curries. The West Riding will have pop up bar at Corporation Street with a range of real ales, non-alcoholic and soft drinks. Enjoy a pint of their specially brewed 'Firebird' ale or warm up with a mulled wine or hot chocolate. A café will also opening in Kingsway Arcade with a range of coffees, teas and cakes. So come down to town early and enjoy some of the fabulous goodies in the pop ups before taking in the spectacular Firebirds Show.
Road Closures:
For the safety of the performers and the gathering crowds some Town Centre streets will be closed to traffic from 5pm on the day of the show. Longcauseway will be closed from the junction of Rishworth Road, Crackenedge Lane (at Battye Street junction), Corporation Street, Bradford Road, Northgate (from Dewsbury Ring Road junction) and Prince Street (at Union Street junction).
To allow for show preparations Town Hall Way will be closed from 8am Friday 15 March until 6pm on Sunday 17 March.
Free Parking:
Free event parking is available at Rishworth Centre, Railway Street from 6pm until Midnight, although people are encouraged to use public transport to get to the event wherever possible.
