To achieve a balanced workforce Kirklees Council regularly offers training placements to under-represented groups:
- Disabled people living in the Kirklees area - Positive Action Training
- Young People - Various Apprenticeship programmes are offered to young people.
Training Placements for Disabled People living in Kirklees
This initiative is part of the Council's strategy to recruit a workforce that is representative of the community it serves.
Training placements are usually offered on a full time basis (an allowance is paid to trainees to cover living expenses). They can last for one year, two years or a longer period depending on the training required for a given job. Trainees work in a council service and receive on-the-job experience, personal development training and a qualification where required.
Completing a placement does not entitle trainees to a job. However, trainees will be given the necessary support when applying for jobs with Kirklees Council.
How do I join?
People who want to join this initiative apply for a training placement. We normally advertise traineeships at certain times during the year, although you can register your interest at anytime and we will contact you when places become available.
Advanced Apprenticeships in Business Administration
These opportunities are offered under our Advanced Apprenticeship programme in Business Administration. Apprentices are offered three year fixed contracts and receive a wage during this time.
Apprentices work in a council service to gain work experience, skills and qualification up to NVQ level 3 in Business Administration - a supervisory level qualification aiming to produce supervisors and managers of the future.
We normally advertise Apprenticeships once a year, usually around April, although you can register your interest at anytime and we will contact you when places become available.
Young people who want to join this initiative will need or expect to get four GCSE grade C or above (or will need to demonstrate equivalent skills and ability).
Other Apprenticeship programmes
As well as our corporate scheme, other types of apprenticeships, including craft apprenticeships, are offered by specific council services such as Building Services and Highways. These could be apprenticeships in joinery, plumbing, highway maintenance work, etc. In addition foundation apprenticeships (NVQ 2) in Business Admin, I.T. and Social Care are also supported within the Council in partnerships with Huddersfield Technical College and other local training providers.
