Kirklees council has a number of benefits available for employees. Some of these are listed below.

Allowances available to employees whilst carrying out council duties
  • Car allowances, motor cycle allowances and bicycle allowances - payable when employees they use their own car/motor cycle or bicycle for council duties
  • Subsistence allowances - for breakfast, lunch, tea and evening meals when employees are working away from the workplace
  • Attendance on training courses and associated allowances
  • Re-imbursement of childcare costs for courses attended outside contractual hours

Transport and travel
The council has a number of discounts on transport and travel for employees:

Transport Services
Council employees who own a vehicle can take advantage of a number of transport services. Those currently on offer are:
  • 25% discount off MOTs
  • Special rates for mechanical repairs/vehicle electrics - all work carried out by fully trained council engineers at competitive prices
  • special rates for car services
  • Special rates for inspecting used cars before buying
  • Get discounted daily parking if a quarterly or annual season ticket is purchased: Parking season tickets - Car park areas and charge
  • Staff parking permits available for essential users (discretion of service)
Travel discounts
Annual Metrocard discount scheme for council employees.
  • Save over £150 on your commuting, leisure and business journeys
  • Get 27.5 % discounts on the cost of Annual Metrocard (half of this discount is paid by metro and half by the council)
  • Interest-free payments via salary/wages deductions
  • Spread payments throughout the year
  • Unlimited travel on bus services throughout West Yorkshire
  • Unlimited travel on train services within your chosen zone
  • No administration fee
Kirklees Bicycle Users Group (KBUG)
KBUG is a forum campaigning to improve commuting routes and facilities for cyclists and encouraging more council employees to commute by bike.
  • KBUG members can borrow a cycle repair toolkit and workstand.
  • KBUG members are given a free reflective waistcoat
Bicycle purchase loan scheme
Loans are available to employees who wish to buy a bicycle.

Financial support and pensions
The council has a range of financial incentives for employees a few of which are listed below:

Pensions Council employees are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). When most people first start working, a retirement pension is one of the last things they think about. As you get older and take on more responsibilities, you may begin to wonder how you will manage when you come to retire or what would happen to your family if anything happened to you. The LGPS can offer you a full range of benefits, which includes:
  • A guaranteed pension based on your final pay and how long you have been a member of the scheme
  • A tax-free lump sum of three times your yearly pension
  • Life assurance cover of at least twice your yearly pay from the day you join the scheme
  • Pensions for your husband or wife and your children
  • Enhanced pension paid early if you have to stop work permanently because you have become ill

Castle & Minster Credit Union
This is a savings scheme for council employees. Additional benefits include:
  • Saving through payroll deduction
  • Free life assurance (some age and health restrictions apply)
  • Loans available
Insurance
  • Loss of no claims bonus - the council meets the loss of the first years no claims bonus of employees involved in accident/damage to their vehicles whilst on official council business and in receipt of an official council mileage allowance
  • The council insures employees in the case of a personal accident and/or assault whilst carrying out council duties
