KSS currently recruits supply teachers, one to one tutors, invigilators and business support staff onto its register of supply staff and provides
a one-stop service for schools to make a single telephone call in the event of them needing supply cover.
KSS was launched in 2004 in partnership with schools, teacher unions and the local authority. KSS is
a non profit making service within Kirklees LA and any profits made are put back into the development
of the service. During the academic year 2010/2011 KSS had a 99.5% success rate in filling requests
for supply cover.
KSS endeavours to be an ethical service providing staff with pay rates in line with national and
local conditions of service, training and development opportunities and support for individual career
aspirations.

Kirklees Supply Service attaches particular value to our Newly Qualified Teachers and have well-established procedures for supporting their induction into the profession where possible by:
having close links with the School Improvement Officers for NQTs;
issuing a flyer to NQTs with contact details of who to approach for support of any kind with their induction;
maintaining regular contact with NQTs and monitoring their progress;
asking for copies of their induction assessments and use them to identify strengths and weaknesses;
providing continuous professional development training;
offering access to resources, via Books plus - schools resource service
encouraging schools to take NQTs
NQTs can do short-term supply work, however this is limited to 16 months. The 16 month limit starts as you start your first short-term supply placement. Once you take up your first short-term supply post "the clock starts ticking" and does not stop during periods when you cannot undertake supply work.
Once the 16 month limit is reached you cannot undertake further supply work unlesss
an extension has been granted by the appropriate body (ie the Local Authority)
the post is a supply placement of at least one term in a setting where induction can be undertaken

One to one tuition is a Department for Education (DfE) incentive which offers support in closing the attainment gap. All secondary and
middle schools in Kirklees have government funding for this scheme, along with 85% of primary
schools.
Children in KS2 and KS3 will be able to access tuition if:
they enter the key stage below the age related expectations;
they are not on the expected trajectory in their key stage;
they are a looked after child.
A child receiving tuition gets 10 hours of tuition. This has to be:
one to one
a minimum of 1 hour per session;
either 10 sessions of English or Maths;
preferably carried out outside the school day;
delivered by a qualified teacher.
A tuition session must have agreed targets and include varied activities planned to engage the
pupil and support children in achieving their potential.
KSS will be offering this service to schools from January 2010.Tutors on the programme will be
paid £25 (outside of school hours) per hour gross for 12 hours per pupil - 10 hours tuition and two
hours planning and liaison time with the pupil's teacher.
The programme is open to newly qualified, current, former and retired teachers.

Supply Business Support Officers are required to provide administrative
support to the school under the direction of the headteacher and/or administrative officer. Key areas for
which businees support staff have responsibility for are:
finance;
administration;
general duties which may be required to fulfil role.

Invigilation is an important and responsible role. As a supply invigilator
you are there to ensure examinations are conducted correctly and securely with no instances of mal practice.
Invigilators have responsibility for:
start time and finish examinations;
ensuring there is normal practice;
ensuring that examination regulations are adhered to.
