Try to form a clear idea of the kind of work you are looking for, then investigate the following sources of job
advertisements:
- Local and national newspapers: The Spen
Guardian, Telegraph and Argus, Yorkshire Jobs & Careers, Dewsbury
Reporter, Yorkshire Post or Yorkshire Evening Post, Guardian (on
Wednesday), Huddersfield Examiner, Wakefield Express, Batley News
are just some of the newspapers that include job sections.
- The Internet: This is a rich source of
recruitment advertisements. Most web-sites include search facilities,
which allow you to find posts relevant to your qualifications
and interests in a matter of minutes, as opposed to wading through
pages and pages of newspapers. Many web-sites now allow you to
register your personal details and job preferences, and, if you
have an email address, will automatically email you each day with
any job matches. Look in External Links on the side bar for useful
web sites.
Note: libraries usually have free
internet access facilities available.
When reading advertisements, study the details carefully. Some applicants don't get invited to an interview, simply
because they have misread the questions. Make sure you answer with strong information about yourself, which is relevant
both to the question being asked and to the job that you are applying for (eg. your experience, skills and abilities).
It is very important that you keep copies of all advertisements as records. In some cases, benefits may be
affected if you work more than a limited number of hours, so your records will be useful as evidence with which to
provide the job centre.
