The council's budget

Last year Kirklees Council approved a three year budget plan to balance the books. The plan includes cuts in spending as funding from central government significantly falls. By 2013/14 savings need to rise to over £80 million to balance the budget.

The council is on plan to make the savings it needs - in particular it has reduced the number of senior managers and is reviewing the way it buys goods and services to get better prices.

What is important to you?

Making savings requires tough choices and we know that different things are important to different people. To help us consider our options about where we most need to spend and save, we gave you the opportunity to tell us about your overall priorities for public services.

Over 9000 of you completed the your place, your say survey and 235 of you took part using our online budget tool (You Choose). Thank you very much to everyone who shared their views. You can read the findings report, Balancing the books: a resident perspective (PDF: 761Kb), now.

What happens next?

Your views were analysed and summarised for consideration by budget decision makers in a series of three resident feedback reports. The final decision on the budget was made by full Council on 22nd February 2012 and you can find out more about the budget spending plans 2012/2013 now.

You'll still have the opportunity to take part in consultation on more specific proposals about changes to services over the coming months. You can find out more about specific consultation exercises and how you can take part by checking the calendar on Involve.
