Objective

One of the major objectives of Kirklees' Getting Fit for 2012 initiative, launched 2 years ago, was achieved when training camps across the country were announced on Monday March 3 by London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG). Included in the training plans are three of Kirklees' major sports facilities:- the Galpharm Stadium, Leeds Road Playing Fields and the planned new Huddersfield Sports Centre.

'Olympic' standard training facilities

The Galpharm has been a well established international venue since it first opened in the mid 1990's, and Leeds Road Playing Fields is equally a well established facility going back many decades but.which now incorporates state-of-the-art facilities in The Sports Barn, Running Track and Multi use games area. And athletes and sports people will be able to practice and train in what (if all goes to plan) will be a brand new sports centre in Huddersfield Town Centre, earmarked to be open in 2011

The endorsement of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games that there are sports facilities in Kirklees that are 'Olympic standard' is not only recognition that the programme is having a positive impact but should also provide additional inspiration and incentive to the borough's young sports people, and potentially help achieve our other great ambition - to have sporting talent from Kirklees competing at the 2012 games.
