Report on the Sports Hall Athletics Grand Finals

About the 2008 Sports Hall Athletics Championships

The 2008 Sports Hall Athletics Championships, part of the Kirklees Youth Games, reached their climax with the finals being held in the Sports Barn at Leeds Road Playing Fields.

The 2008 Championships have seen nearly 4000 children from schools throughout Kirklees competing in track and field events, specially developed for indoors.

The finals involved 20 teams from Kirklees Junior, Middle and Secondary schools, competing in 9 different track (running) events and 6 different field (jumping and throwing) events.

With each team comprising 12 girls and 12 boys, 480 children competed in 90 events on the day.

The atmosphere and excitement in the Sports Barn was palpable. Councillor Jim Dodds, Deputy Leader of the council and Cabinet Member for Children's Services, who presented the medals, congratulated all the competitors for contributing to such a an enjoyable and exciting event, as well as thanking Andy Cook, Kirklees Community Coach and the Sports Partnership Development Managers for their work in organisation and administration.

Holmfirth won on a count back of the number of wins (11 event wins as against the 8 event wins of Kirkburton).
