Rules about the sort of memorial you can erect

  • Memorials must be constructed in accordance with the National Association of Memorial Masons Code of Working Practice.
  • An approved safe system must be used by accredited masons only to secure the memorial into the ground.
  • No headstone or similar memorial shall be erected unless it has an appropriate foundation which must not be visible above the ground and which must be to the satisfaction of the council.
  • Memorials are to be fixed in line with adjoining memorials.
  • On a lawn type grave any memorial vase must be incorporated in the base of the memorial.
  • No operation of any kind shall be permitted inside the grounds without the prior written consent of both the grave owner and Bereavement Services.
  • Only accredited masons shall be granted authority to undertake memorial work.
  • Such persons shall be required to take all necessary precautions to protect the grass, trees, plants, walls, paths and adjacent memorials or vaults from damage and the area shall be completely cleared of materials, tools and rubbish when work is not in progress.
  • Any damage caused shall be made good at the mason's expense.
  • Monuments and headstones and other memorials must be prepared ready for fixing before being taken into the cemetery.
  • Materials or tools may not be stored or left within the cemetery on completion of the work.
