Applying for a copy of a stillbirth certificate

How to apply

  • Due to the sensitive nature of stillbirth registrations, the procedure for ordering certificates differs from other types of registration.
  • Registers in current use are held at the local Register Office and only the child's mother or father (if the father's details are included in the entry) can obtain a copy.
  • Certificates from older registers can only be obtained from the General Register Office.

Contact the Registration Service

The Registration Service is primarily concerned with registration of births and deaths, taking notices of marriages and civil partnerships, performing civil ceremonies and issuing copy certificates from records dating back to 1837.
