How does the Private Sector Housing Unit help private tenants in Kirklees?

The Private Sector Housing Unit helps tenants in privately rented houses to live in reasonable conditions.

We also help private tenants who are being harassed or threatened with illegal eviction.

The Private Sector Housing Unit run a Landlord Accreditation Scheme to encourage landlords to raise standards in private rented accommodation and improve management practices.

Help for tenants in private rented properties

If you are a tenant in a private rented property and you are having problems because your landlord has not carried out any necessary repairs (for example if your heating has failed, you have no hot water and there are serious repairs that need to be done), we may be able to help you by negotiating with the landlord or taking more formal action.

You should ensure that your landlord gives you an up-to-date gas safety certificate from a CORGI registered gas fitter. We also recommend that you ask your landlord to provide a certificate from a qualified electrician stating that the electrical installation is safe, although this is not a legal requirement.

If you share a rented property with other people (a house in multiple occupation - HMO) you should make sure that there are enough facilities for all the people who live there, and that there are adequate fire precautions in place in the house. You can contact us to find out what facilities the law says you should have.

The law requires HMOs (three storey properties with five or more persons living there) to be licensed. (see Mandatory licensing of houses in multiple occupation).
