How to get started with a direct payment

To start with you need a Community Care Assessment (CCA) or Children in Need Assessment.

For more information on assessments please contact:

When you have an assessment you will be asked whether or not you would like a Direct Payment.

Personal Assistant (PA) or Agency

You can use the money to a employ and Personal Assistant or you can choose an agency to provide staff.

If you do not want the responsibilities of being an employer you can pay a care agency to provide staff for you. Your Independent Living Advisor will help you decide which is the best option for you.

A Personal Assistant (PA) is someone who is paid to assist you to be independent and live your life.

A PA is employed directly by you and to provide tailored support to meet your social and personal needs and to assist in your day to day living. They can be anyone, including a family member, friend or neighbour, as long as they do not live in the same house as you.

If you don't already have somebody specific in mind your Independent Living Advisor can support you to find a PA by advertising on your behalf or searching our database of Personal Assistants.

Payroll Services and insurance

There are many organisations that will provide payroll services on your behalf or you can purchase computer software to help you run your own payroll for your PA. You will also need insurance, and again there are companies who provide specialist policies to cover Direct Payment Users. Your Independent Living Advisor will help you decide which are the best options for you.

Banks Accounts and Credit Union Accounts

Direct payment money must be paid in to a separate bank account and you will need to open a current account at any high street bank.
You may want to consider opening a Credit Union account which will make the payments to the carers for you but there is a charge for this which you can pay out of your direct payment money.

Your Independent Living Advisor will help you decide which is best for you and help you set them up if you need support.
