About European Union funding

The Funding and Investment Unit can offer guidance and support to all potential applicants looking to access European Funding.

The range of European funding available is diverse, each programme has its own processes and application criteria so it essential to have up to date guidance and advice.

The majority of funding that Kirklees receives comes from the European Union Structural Funds however we can offer information to you about any of the other European programmes available.

The two main programmes that Kirklees organisations have benefited from previously are the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Competitiveness Fund and the ESF Employment Programme.

Types of European Union funding

ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Regional Competitiveness and Employment Programme
Funding to to boost economic performance in the region through investments aimed at increasing innovation, competitiveness and employment.
ESF (European Social Fund) Employment Programme
Funding to tackle barriers to work faced by people who are unemployed or disadvantaged in the labour market, such as training people who lack basic skills and good qualifications.
European Fisheries Fund (EFF) (external site)
The 2007-13 European Fisheries Fund (EFF) provides financial assistance to help implement the 2002 reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and to support the restructuring that has become necessary as the sector has developed.
European Union Rural Development Policy 2007-2013 (external site)
Policy intended to:
  • Improve the competitiveness of the agricultural and forestry sector.
  • Improve the environment and the countryside.
  • Improve the quality of life in rural areas and encouraging diversification of the rural economy.
European non structural funds: Culture programme (2007-2013) (external site)
For projects and initiatives to celebrate Europe's cultural diversity and enhance the shared cultural heritage.
European non structural funds: Lifelong Learning Programme
Supports education and training across Europe and provides funding for all stages of lifelong learning; activities at school, at college, at university, in the workplace and in the community.
LIFE+ (external site)
A fund providing specific support for the development and implementation of community environmental policy and legislation. There are three components:
  • Nature and biodiversity
  • Environment policy and governance
  • Information and communication
