Bookstart
Kirklees Culture and Leisure Services

Bookstart is a Government funded scheme that provides free books for all children in the country, with the rational of encouraging children from an early age to develop a love of books and help improve their early literacy skills.
Research has shown a significant increase in children’s literacy skills, when encouraged to share the Bookstart packs with their parents/carers. This can also mean that children start school with an advantage that can last throughout their lifetime.
The bookstart packs
From September 2005, there are three free quality book packs (with a retail value of £60) available to all children in Kirklees.
The 7-9 month Bookstart packs are available from your Health Visitor or local or mobile Library and Information Centre.
The 2 year Bookstart Plus packs are available from your Health Visitor or local or mobile Library and Information Centre.

The My Bookstart Treasure Chest for 3 year olds is available from Health Visitors, local or mobile Library and Information Centre.

There is also a Booktouch pack available which has been specially designed for visually impaired children. Your Health Visitor or Service for Children with Sensory Impairment will be able to give you more information. This is available for children 0-4 years and is delivered by post.
Sharing books with your child is not just about reading the book to them.
The Bookstart Book Crawl
Is your child under 5?
Then they can join in with the Bookstart Book Crawl at their local library and start collecting a series of beautiful picture certificates
Any child under 5 can join in the Book Crawl if they have their own library ticket.
Your child is given their own Book Crawl collector's card and then each time they visit the library they receive a sticker.
