Kirklees Transcription Service is the council's department where alternative formats for people with a visual impairment are created. The department can create documents in Braille, large print and audio format for anyone who requests it.

We can also produce tactile images such as maps, plans, diagrams and even simplified pictures.

We also have a reading machine which can scan and reproduce the text in an electronic format.

Opening times

Monday to Friday: 09.30 - 4.30

  • Braille

Braille is produced in grade 2, on doubled sided paper. On request we can produce grade 1 Braille and single sided. A binding and labelling service is also available.
  • Large print

Produced at a minimum size of Arial 16 Bold. We can make adjustments to fit customers' requirements.
  • Audio formats

Audio is available in a variety of formats including CD, mp3, tape and others. All productions are recorded in our department studio by trained staff members.

KTS audio is produced in line with National Standard Guidelines for which we have been awarded a Transcription Quality Assessment Scheme Accreditation (TQAS) since September 2006.
  • Reading Machine

This machine quickly scans print, then reads it in an electronic voice. It will read a printed document in a basic American electronic voice. The documents can be saved in a text format, which can then be transcripted into Braille, edited as large print or saved as a text file for use on a PC with speech software.
  • Tactile maps / Charts and diagrams

These are made to order on either swell paper or thermoform. The images are raised up for tactile recognition. A key to the diagram is also provided in Braille, large print or audio.

I need a tactile map - how do I go about it?

Due to the uniqueness of each map, it is better to give us a ring or call into the office where we will be happy to discuss details with you.

What if I need further copies?

Simply tell us to save your documents when you place your order and we will be happy to keep them on file. NB. A master is mandatory for audio work.

When sending documents to you is there anything I should avoid?

Yes, where possible please avoid pictures behind print, blurred print, handwritten or text in closed boxes. Please note any re-typing due to the above will be charged at the current hourly rate.

Can you give me an estimate of how much my order will cost?

Yes, you will need to contact us directly, where we will give you an individualised quote.

How long will it take to process my order?

For letters and minutes of meeting - we need to receive the document at a minimum of two weeks before the deadline. For lengthy documents we will need to discuss this with you on a job by job basis.

What sorts of things are put into other formats?

Just about everything and anything from washing machine instructions to menus, books, time-tables, exam papers, invoices and holiday brochures.

Tactile imaging can range from room layouts, bus and rail stations, town centres, graphs, TV controls and instruction diagrams.
