Using computers in Kirklees libraries

Kirklees Information - Huddersfield Library - July 2007
kinfo@kirklees.gov.uk

There are 23 libraries in Kirklees. Whether you are a member of Kirklees Libraries, or a visitor, you can use any of our computer facilities for free (there are charges for printing only).

In our libraries you will find some of the following:

  • Over 180 bookable computers to access the Internet, email or to use word-processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation packages
  • Windows XP and Microsoft Office XP, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher
  • Links to useful websites - search tools, reference, local interest
  • Printing facilities
  • Library catalogue - search for books, videos, DVDs and other materials
All Kirklees libraries vary in the number of computers, although printing facilities are available everywhere.

How do I register to use the computers?

If you would like to use our computers on a regular basis, we recommend that you become a library member. To join us as a member, simply visit or ring your local Kirklees library, and ask a member of staff or, complete our online form.

Visitors

If you are a visitor, you can use a computer for a maximum of 30 minutes per day, subject to availability, however, you will not be able to book in advance.

How to book a computer

You can book a computer by:
  • asking a member of staff at the reception or enquiry desk, or
  • ringing your local library to find out if there is a machine available

You can book a computer on the day you wish to use it, or reserve a machine in advance. You will need your library card with you each time you make a booking or come to use our computers.
Please note: Your session will be safe for the first 15 minutes only. If you are late for your session it may be given to someone else.

How long can I book for?

You are allowed a maximum of 2 hours of usage per day in one 2-hour session or two 1-hour sessions, subject to the availability of computers. In our libraries where demand outstrips the number of computers available, particularly at certain times of the day, time allocated to a session may be reduced.
Please note: You may extend your session for a further 5 minutes within the last 5 minutes of your session, if someone else has not booked on the same machine and if library open hours allow.

What can I use it for?

You can use our facilities for whatever you like in accordance with our library policy. Here are a few examples of what you can do:
  • homework, create a CV, write a letter, personal study
  • email friends and family
  • browse the internet: such as shopping, doing research, book a holiday, job seeking, find out about hobbies and interests

Using the Internet

You can use the Internet free of charge and access the majority of sites on the web except any sites displaying offensive material (these sites are web filtered).

Using Email

You can use email at any of the bookable computers. Also, there are some machines designated for email use only (at Huddersfield and Dewsbury libraries only). These computers are not pre-booked, but can be accessed on a self service basis for one 15 minute session at a time. Please check with counter staff if someone is already using the machine.
Important advice for email users: Please ensure that you sign out before leaving the computer after you have finished using Web-enabled email such as Hotmail or Yahoo.

Printing your work

You will be charged for any printing of your work: 10p for black and white and 40p for colour. A full list of other fees and charges is available.

Saving your work

You can either bring your own floppy disks or memory sticks to save your work. You can also buy floppy disks from the reception or enquiry desks for 50p per disk.
Please note: Huddersfield Reference Library has a CD-Writer (please ask a member of staff for details).

It is recommended that you save your work to the dedicated space on the computer you are working at (please ask a member of staff if you are unsure about where to save your work). Ask a member of staff to transfer your work onto your floppy disk or a memory stick or to print out your work.

After you have saved or printed your work, please make sure you delete your work from the computer. Any work you do not delete could potentially be accessed by somebody else who uses the computer after you.

Help and support

If you require any assistance or have a query about the use of our computers, or any of our other services, please ask a member of staff.

Some libraries provide learning sessions offering basic computer skills to help you get started.  Ask in your local branch for details.
