Reader Development - what's that?
Reader Development is a buzz word within libraries, bookshops, radio, television, in fact the whole of the book industry. You may not have heard of the phrase before, but you'll have seen its impact.
Nowadays, you'll be used to seeing posters in your local library or bookshop for readers' groups and book clubs, flyers for readers' days, TV or radio book programmes with their top ten best books voted for by viewers, or listeners. Bookstores and libraries are the new leisure centres, and all of this is because of reader development.
If the book is a vehicle that can take us to other places, cultures and times, then the reader is the driver. The reader is you, or me, in the hot seat deciding which book to test drive and how long, or fast the journey will take. And each experience will be different for each reader.
Traditionally reading a book was considered a solo hobby, now in a climate of reader development, you can choose to meet with other readers, either face to face, or online. Through coming to events and groups, people discover new books, authors and friends. Readers deepen their relationship with books by gaining fresh perspectives through chatting with others.
So, what are you waiting for? There's a big wide world out there, and it's all on the shelves, waiting to be taken out.
