Benefits and suitability

Training involves highly intense cardiovascular sessions and involves training for 3 very different sports which works all the muscles and bones in your body at a more even level. This helps to develop a stronger body, with a tendency for less injuries, and no pain.

Triathletes also tend to have great physiques, basically because the training complements the body in many ways. Running helps develop long, lean muscles; swimming helps shape your upper body; whilst cycling helps tone your lower body.

History of triathlon

The origin of triathlon is anecdotally attributed to a race in France during the 1920 to 1930s that was called "Les trois sports". This had a 3 km run, a 12 km bike ride and a crossing of the channel Marne. Those three parts were done without any break.

In respect of the Modern Triathlon, the first known swim, bike and run triathlons were organized by members of the San Diego Track Club. The races were held on summer evenings and were originally intended as no more than a break in routine from the normal grind of training for marathons and long distance racing. 25th September, the date of the first Mission Bay Triathlon, is celebrated as the day modern triathlon began.
