Rugby has a reputation as a slightly dangerous game and minor injuries do occur. Rugby helps to improve both aerobic and anaerobic fitness because, like many sports, it requires steady activity as well as frequent bursts of exertion. Speed, strength and agility are all helped by playing rugby.

The Rugby League game developed from a split with the Rugby Football Union. The split began in 1886 when the Rugby Football Union (RFU) introduced strict amateur rules, and was exacerbated in 1893 when Yorkshire clubs wanted players to be paid when they missed work due to matches. The RFU rejected this proposal and began to suspend northern clubs and players.
The complete break came on 29th August 1895. Under the threat of expulsion from the RFU if they could not prove their amateur status, 21 leading Lancashire and Yorkshire clubs met at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, where they voted unanimously to form the Northern Rugby Football Union (NU) and allow payments.
