Footballer, born Huddersfield, 1948
"My mother didn't want me to be a footballer, she thought there were other...,and better, things to do"At the 1973 FA Cup Final, First Division Leeds played against Second Division Sunderland. Twelve months earlier Leeds had vanquished giants Arsenal, and everyone expected them to do the same to Sunderland.
However, Leeds could not break the Sunderland defence and lost 1-0. The one star of the Leeds side was Trevor Cherry, their most inexperienced player.
Although he played defence in the match he attacked when the chance arose, and almost succeeded in scoring a goal with a stunning header. This ability to play any position became the defining characteristic of Trevor's career.
Trevor played with Huddersfield Town from 1965-72. He became captain of Leeds United in 1976, and went on to be player/manager for Bradford City. He played for England a total of 27 times and captained them during their 1980 Australian tour.
