Fencer, born Huddersfield, 1966
"Initially we were pin cushions; 14 weeks later they were the ones who were getting shaken up"Fencing is one of the oldest Olympic sports. Britain's most successful sabre
fencer of the modern era and competitor in three Olympics is James Williams.
As a teenager in Huddersfield, James had seen fencers at a local sports centre but was more interested in football and athletics.
It was whilst training in the Army after leaving school, that a colleague suggested he try fencing. James was instantly "captured by it".
Within two years he became the Inter-Services Junior Master at Arms and was the first non commissioned officer to be captain of the Army Fencing Union. He is also the first Briton in modern times to reach a sabre fencing World Cup final.
