Sporting heritage is a vital part of Kirklees' history: the game of Rugby League was founded in the George Hotel, Huddersfield, in 1892; the first woman to win a cross channel swimming race came from Dewsbury; and the first British Cyclist to finish the Tour de France came from Mirfield.
This exhibition looks at eight sports people from Kirklees. All have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their chosen sport. Some of them have had to struggle against difficult barriers, and all have pushed themselves to be the best they could be in their chosen field.
The full exhibition includes many original objects belonging to the Sporting Greats: Eileen Fenton's swimming costume, Derek Ibbotson's running spikes and many other amazing artefacts.
