What is INtouch kirklees?

Intouch

The INtouch digital TV site contains information provided by local services, local people and community organisations. It is available to households who subscribe to Virgin Media (previously ntl and Telewest) digital television, Sky Digital or Netgem. INtouch allows people to get local information and use services using their TV and remote control. It is particularly valuable for people who don't have access to a computer and the internet. As well as using INtouch to find information, residents can also add their own information, make comments and ask questions. This interactivity is an important part of INtouch. It allows residents to stay at home yet still learn, question and be heard.

INtouch is also available via mobile phone. The INtouch mobile site provides another way for people to access local services and information. Anyone who has a mobile phone that can connect to the Internet can use INtouch mobile. This service is particularly useful for anyone who needs to access information whilst away from home.

What has happened so far?

INtouch began as a pilot project in November 2001 and the site was launched in July 2002. The aim of the project was to test the views of local volunteer households towards using digital TV to find out about and use local public services. It brought together people from the public, voluntary and private sectors including:
  • Kirklees Council
  • Primary Care Trusts
  • Artimedia
  • ntl
  • Dewsbury West Pathfinder
  • Neighbourhood Renewal
The pilot project ended in June 2003 and the independent final evaluation report (PDF 934KB) concluded that 'INtouch has clearly demonstrated the feasibility of using digital TV for the provision of locally focussed and shaped public services.'

The project received extra funding from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister until the end of March 2005. Since then, INtouch has been maintained by Kirklees Council's web development team.

Due to the success of INtouch, Kirklees Council was also given the opportunity to develop a national digital television project (called DigiTV). This project has already helped many other local authorities to create their own digital TV sites. You can find out more about this by visiting the DigiTV website.

What's next?

The partners continue to work together to improve the information on the site and monitor feedback from the community. The search for further content providers continues as the site expands its audience. If you would like to get involved, please contact Diane Sims on 01484 414823.

We are also hoping to offer a wider range of services in the future. This might include GP appointment bookings, a prescription ordering service, choice based lettings and discussion forums. If you have any suggestions for new services, please let us know.
