General description of the area :Kreis Unna is situated on the eastern edge of the Ruhr region. The main industrial towns of Kreis Unna are Lünen, Bergkamen, Kamen, Bönen, Unna and Holzwickede. The southern towns of Kreis Unna, namely Schwerte and Fröndenberg border onto the Sauerland, a landscape of wooded hills and mountains. Selm and Werne the towns at the northern edge of the Kreis Unna belong to the Münsterland, an important area for agricultural production. The eastern edge of the Kreis is an area of intensive farming. Main economic sectors: Logistics - transport and warehouses/stocks Mechanical Engineering Metal working Recycling, waste recovery, disposal of waste Chemical and bioengineering industries New media services Computer technology Main employers: Karstadt - central warehouse for the Karstadt department store. Interspe - logistics and transport solutions Schering - chemical industry Witco - bioengineering Deutsche Bergbautechnik (DBT) - mining engineers Vincent Wiederholt - metal works VDN- metal works Stahlwerk Ergste - metal works H¨ttenwerke Kayser - metalworks Main natural resources: Coal was the main natural resource of the area. However, following the decline of the mining industry in the area and the imminent closure of the last mine in the area, there are no other commercially exploited natural resources in the area. |
