Listening Points
Adults and Communities, Marketing and Public Information Team - June 2008
laura.dobson@kirklees.gov.uk
Listening Points, funded by Kirklees Neighbourhood Renewal and managed by Kirklees Adult Services, have been developed to help bring access to information on issues that affect residents' daily lives. People can choose from a range of information and what's more they can take it home free to listen to in the comfort of their own home if they wish, as all the information is available on audio CD.
The Listening Points provide social care information on CDs for all people who need it. The CD's aim to overcome communication barriers that people often face when using printed information. The CD's help people get the services they need in a way they find attractive and easy to use.
People can either listen to key information on the CDs at the Listening Points or take them home - free - to play in full on their own CD, DVD players, computers or game consoles.
Take up of the CD's is good and resident Pamela Gillet, who works voluntarily in the Drop By Centre said:
"The listening point is going well - we are getting people from other areas into the Drop By Centre. People have started taking CDs. Not everyone can read, but people will ask for help or listen to the CD. There are very useful departments’ and organisations’ telephone numbers on them.
The Listening Points Project is providing social care information to service users and carers in their own homes."
Phyllis Murphy, who works in Fieldhead Community Centre, said:
"The machine does the talking. A touch of the button gives you the information you need. It is easy, quick and fun. CD's can be taken home and listened to at your own pace. The listening point is providing us with the information that will change our lives."
The Listening Points system uses solid state technology, like compact discs but in the form of more versatile miniature cartridges which contain information files that can be read by a computer.
Kirklees Adults and Communities Group Services said:
"The service was driven entirely by demand. It's really about the things which concern local people. We did a lot of consulting with the people to gage what they are interested in, whether it is community safety, information for carers, or pensions and benefits."
