Voice Over (Donna): Thinking about abuse is something none of us want to do, but keeping safe is vital. Because we are vulnerable, people with a learning disability are more often victims of abuse. Here at Kirklees we want to empower people to keep themselves safe. We have worked with the Risky Things Theatre Company to put together a performance about keeping safe. This has since been made into a DVD film.

Kathy: Hello, my name is Kathy. These are actors. They are going to act out stories about bad or ‘risky things’ that can happen to people. It’s called ‘Flatmates’.

This is Danielle. She doesn’t talk, but she does understand.
Danielle lives in a big house with other women.
This is Kaye and this is Louise, and this is one of the staff, Brian.

Scene Extract:
Brian: Danielle you have the dusting as usual. Kaye, you have the vacuum cleaner.
Kaye: I don’t like it.
Brian: You have to do something.
Kaye [to Danielle]: You’re so slow; you’re no good at dusting.

Kathy: Question: How does Danielle feel?

Voice Over (Donna): Copies of the Risky Things DVD can be ordered from the Kirklees Safeguarding Team.
