North House

North House is operated by Kirklees Council and gives short breaks for adults with learning disabilities aged between 18 and 65
who live in South Kirklees.
What is North House like?
All the bedrooms have a single bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, a chair, and a wash hand basin, and a television. All bedrooms have a lockable
door, people who come to stay for a short break have their own bedroom key if they wish.
All the rooms are decorated differently and people who stay at North House can bring things from home to personalise their bedrooms.
On the ground floor there are bathroom adapted to meet the needs of people with physical disabilities.
There is a small accessible patio area on one side of the building, and a large garden area on the other, which is accessible via the
conservatory. The house is well equipped with televisions, a video recorder and music centre. People can choose to spend time in any of the
communal areas as well as their own rooms.
A safe is available to ensure the safekeeping of money.
Our aim
At North House we aim to provide short term breaks to adults with learning disabilities between 18 and 65, who live in the South Kirklees area.
North House provides short breaks for people with a learning disability from any ethnic, cultural or religious background.
How will we do this?
Here is a list of things we need to do to be able to provide the service.
- Know and understand the needs of all the people we offer short breaks to.
- Operate a fair booking system.
- Provide a comfortable and attractive homely environment.
- Provide a safe environment that meets the assessed needs of all our service users
- Keep the needs of our service users under review.
- Provide opportunities for service users and their families tell us their opinion of our service.
- Promote independence, choice, individuality, community participation, respect and dignity.
- Have regular reviews with the service user.
How do I get a short break at North House?

Before taking a short term break at North House, service users and their families and cares will be supported to make a positive and informed
decision about the break.
If a service can be offered we will work with you to introduce you to the staff and show you around the house, you can come for tea.
Activities
While you stay at North House we will support you to do a range of activities of your choice, these could include, visits to the pub or cinema,
meals out and visits to parks.
We try to provide support so that people can continue to do the things they would do from home. If someone has a particular interest, staff
will support them to continue this during their stay. For instance you may go regularly to a social club or evening class.
Promoting dignity and respect
- Same gender support with personal care, unless this is inappropriate because of cultural or religious reasons.
- Staff will not open any mail you receive without your permission.
- During your stay you will be offered a choice of menus.
- You will be asked how you want to be guided, moved, supported and transferred.
- Staff will always knock and wait for an answer before coming into your bedroom. Consideration will be given for anyone who requires support with this or who has any communication difficulties.
- You can choose where and when to eat, whether to eat alone or with others including staff. Mealtimes are relaxed, and flexible and allow for your activities and schedules.
- We will support you to make or receive telephone calls in private.
- North House has a No Smoking Policy.
- Staff will take care of your belongings.
Healthcare and medication
At North House you have the right to your health needs being met and to use the full range of healthcare services available within the community.
- Your medication will be arranged efficiently and safely using a locked medication cabinet.
How much does it cost to stay at North House?
If you stay for a week it will cost £77.73
The nightly cost is £11.10 (this varies according to the assessment of individuals)

After each visit you will be asked about your stay, you will also be given a copy of Kirklees complaints, comments and Compliments procedure.
