What is Kingsmill Lodge?

Kingsmill Lodge is an Adult Services building, only a few minutes' walk from Huddersfield Town Centre. It is home for ten people who have learning disabilities.

The people who live there get help from the staff who work there to do as much as they can for themselves.

Everyone who lives at Kingsmill has a person called a key worker who helps them plan how they want to live. Staff will help people living there, to have interesting hobbies and do other things, as well.

What is Kingsmill Lodge like?

Kingsmill Lodge has two lounges with a television and video. It has two kitchens, a place to wash and iron clothes and two bathrooms. There is help for getting in and out of the bath. Kingsmill also has two shower rooms.

There is a dining room, but people can also eat in their own rooms if they want to. Each person who lives at Kingsmill Lodge has their own bedroom, sink and shower.

There are bedrooms on the ground floor for people who cannot walk or get up the stairs. There are also bedrooms on the first floor.

What services does Kingsmill Lodge have?

Kingsmill Lodge is large and comfortable. You can bring your own things to make your room feel like home. In the lounges, there are all the things that you would expect to find at home, including a computer and games console. Staff can help you carry on enjoying all the things you like to do, like going to the pub, pictures, restaurants and sports centres.

Who are the staff who work at Kingsmill Lodge?

18 staff work at Kingsmill Lodge. They have a lot of experience and have been trained especially to help people with learning disabilities. Staff have also had training in being clean with food, movement and handling and emergency help.

June Bell is acting team manager of the Kingsmill Lodge service. She has 25 years experience of working with people with learning disabilities and supports people on family placement. Jean has the NVQ4 and a teaching certificate.

Who can stay at Kingsmill Lodge?

Kingsmill Lodge gives a place to live for people who are over 18 years old and have a learning disability. Although there is not space for wheelchairs, staff will help people who have other needs, such as physical disabilities. The staff will work with you and your carers to make sure they meet your needs in a safe and helpful way. Staff will also help you with any religious or cultural needs that you have. They will also help you talk about your needs by using symbols, such as Maketon.

How can you start using Kingsmill Lodge?

You will need a Community Care Assessment. This says that you need to live in a longer stay residential home to help you. The Community Care Assessment is normally done with you, your carer and your social worker. If you would like to have a place at Kingsmill Lodge and you do not have a social worker, we will be happy to put you in touch with one.

For more information about getting a Community Care Assessment, please telephone your local Gateway to Care on:

01484 223000

or e-mail gatewaytocare@kirklees.gov.uk.

Carers can also contact Kirklees Carers Gateway on 01484 226050 or e-mail carers.gateway@kirklees.gov.uk

If there is an empty bedroom at Kingsmill Lodge, you will be able to look at it first and have a cup of tea with the staff, to see if you like Kingsmill Lodge.

If you and your carer are happy with what you see, you will then be able to have a meal and meet the other people who live there. If that goes well, you will then have an overnight stay and when you are ready, move in.

How much will you have to pay?

A Social Worker will help fill out a Personal Financial Statement. Adult Services Client Financial Affairs will then work out what you need to pay. Charges are worked out on your income and start at £65.50 and go up to £545.41 every week, if you have savings of over £10,000. This charge covers the room, gas and electric and other household bills, meals and help by staff.

Each person living at Kingsmill Lodge gets the same amount of money, £18.50 every week.

These payments may change every 12 months.

If you go out, you will pay for your own transport and activities.
