REAL means Realistic Employment for Adults with Learning disabilities. Its job is to develop a specialist employment service for people who have high support needs. REAL links closely with the local community learning disability teams, with carers and with key workers.
Although REAL is now core funded, extra resources are sought through various bids for money. These include the European Social Fund and the Learning and Skills Council.
At the end of March 2004, 102 people were supported by REAL in employment or work based activities. 50 people were working under the permitted work ruling. Another 52 people were in a valued occupation.

Work Activities and Trials
REAL has gone from strength to strength. Service users have gained a wide variety of employment experiences, with the introduction of new work initiatives. For some, this meets the need to be involved in work based activities. For others, it has been a stepping stone to paid employment. The following are all projects within the REAL scheme
