- Ignore and walk away from people who tease or talk to you in a way that worries you. Ignore someone who is bullying you. TELL someone – a friend, family, or someone else you can trust.
- Beware of strangers
- don’t go anywhere with strangers
- don’t get into a strangers’ car
- don’t go into a strangers’ house
- don’t accept gifts or presents from people you don’t know.
- Avoid risks
- use main roads
- use busy areas – not lonely places
- use well lit areas at night
- travel and walk with a friend
- follow routes you know
- carry a personal alarm – keep it handy in your pocket – not at the bottom of your bag
- Keep your valuables safe – keep money in a purse or wallet out of sight. Keep your mobile phone safe – don’t walk with it in your hand – keep your bag close to you.
- If you feel worried the situation is dangerous or are being followed – go to let someone know – in a shop or a pub. Someone at a bus-stop, a police station. Shout or make a lot of noise to let people know you are worried.
- Know that certain parts of your body and other people’s bodies are private
- you CAN and SHOULD say “no” if anyone touches you in a way that you don’t want them to
- Know that you don’t have to keep secrets if it upsets you or makes you feel uncomfortable.
- Keep your house secure, always close windows and lock your door when you leave.
- Do not let people into your house that you don’t know without checking who they are first.
- Use a door chain so you can see the person.
- Always ask to see workers’ identity cards saying who they are and where they are from, before letting them in
- Keep purses/wallets, cash out of sight.
- Think road safety. Cross at Pelican and Zebra Crossings. Don’t wear Personal Stereos when crossing the road because you can’t hear traffic.
- Be ready for emergencies or things you have not planned to do
- Carry a 20p for phone box
- Carry a written note with your information on - your name, address, doctors information and any medication you are taking, a contact person. It can be difficult to remember such things in an emergency, if anything happens.
