Adult abuse

Vulnerable adults are at particular risk of abuse. A vulnerable adult depends on other people for at least some of their care and support.

Abuse refers to various forms of force, threats and fraud.

The main forms of abuse are:
  • physical abuse - violence which causes pain or injury
  • sexual abuse - unwanted sexual or touching behaviour without consent
  • psychological abuse - anything said or written which causes emotional distress
  • neglect and acts of omission - the failure to provide care or attention to the point where a person’s health or safety is affected
  • discriminatory abuse - unfair treatment due to a person’s race, gender, sexual choice, religion or disability
  • financial or material abuse - the theft or misuse of a person’s property, money, possessions or benefits.

The abuser could be anybody.

If you feel that you or someone you know is being abused telephone Kirklees Adult Services on:

Child abuse

Children with certain disabilities, such as learning difficulties, are at particular risk from abuse. All children and young people have a fundamental right to be protected from harm. Safeguarding them is everybody’s responsibility, including parents, relatives, neighbours and professionals. Child abuse occurs when a person causes harm, or fails to prevent harm, to a child.

Children may be abused in a family, an institutional or community setting, by those known and trusted by them, or, more rarely, by a stranger. They may be abused by adults or by other children. The main forms of child abuse are physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse or neglect. A child can be abused in more than one of these ways. If you suspect child abuse you should report it.
