Remand Carers

Andrea Hoofe - June 2007

There are a small number of carers whose role it is to take young people who have been remanded to the Care of the Local Authority by a Youth Court. This will be because they have been charged with an offence and the Court does not believe it is appropriate for them to return home on bail. This would normally be because of the seriousness of the offence or the significant risk of further offending.

Placements are usually made at short notice, for short lengths of time determined by the Court process.
The remand carers work closely with the staff from the Youth Offending team and receive additional training from that team about the Court process and their work with the young person.
